Why do photographers say "investment" and not "price"?

I still have on my wall photos taken of my grandmother at age 2. And of my father at 1. And even of my great grandparents sailing. Its easy to think that we're just standing in front of a camera for a photographer to snap away and then send us exactly what is uploaded.
